Freetown City Council has successfully completed the Community Climate Action Ambassador Training under Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr’s flagship initiative, the #FreetownTheTreeTown Campaign.
Over several sessions across all catchments, more than 400 women and young people were trained to strengthen local leadership for climate action. The program began at the Dwarzark and continued in Ojuku, Calaba Town, and Mile 13.
The training combined interactive discussions with practical modules on environmental management, tree and mangrove conservation, and climate resilience. Participants explored how issues like indiscriminate tree cutting, poor waste disposal, and land degradation contribute to flooding and soil erosion, while also considering the policies needed to protect Freetown’s environment.
At the end of the sessions, participants were officially recognized as Certified Community Climate Action Ambassadors, ready to champion climate action and environmental stewardship in their communities.
This milestones highlights that meaningful climate solutions are built by communities themselves. By investing in local knowledge and nurturing environmental champions, FCC is building a growing network of advocates who will inspire action, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to a greener, more climate-resilient Freetown for generations to come.
