Frequently asked questions (faqs)
What is #FreetownTheTreeTown?
#FreetownTheTreeTown is a large-scale urban reforestation initiative aimed at restoring tree cover in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It combines community participation, digital technology, and sustainable forestry to combat climate change, prevent floods, and create green jobs.
Why is urban tree planting important for Freetown?
Freetown has lost a significant portion of its natural tree cover due to urban expansion and deforestation. This has led to flooding, landslides, rising temperatures, and poor air quality. By replanting trees, we help reduce environmental risks, cool urban areas, and improve public health.
How many trees have been planted so far?
As of now, over 1.2 Million trees have been planted across Freetown, with an 80% survival rate. Our goal is to reach 1 million trees in the next phase and 5 million trees by 2030.
What types of trees are planted?
We prioritize native and climate-resilient species that provide maximum environmental benefits. In coastal areas, we plant mangroves to protect against erosion, while in urban spaces, we plant shade trees and fruit trees to benefit communities.
How does the TreeTracker app work?
The TreeTracker app assigns a unique geotagged ID to every tree planted. Community growers upload photos and updates to verify tree health. This ensures transparency, accountability, and long-term monitoring.
Who takes care of the trees after they are planted?
Trees are maintained by trained community growers, who water, prune, and protect them. Growers use the TreeTracker app to record updates and are paid through a micro-payment system for their work.
What happens if a tree dies?
While we strive for high survival rates, some trees may not make it. Dead trees are replaced during the next planting cycle, and growers are trained to detect and prevent common threats like pests and drought stress.
How can I get involved?
There are several ways to participate:
✅ Volunteer – Help with tree planting or community outreach.
✅ Donate – Support tree planting and grower training programs.
✅ Track Your Tree – Follow the progress of trees planted in your name.
✅ Sponsor a Planting Site – Businesses and organizations can fund large-scale reforestation efforts.
Can schools or community groups participate?
Yes! We work with schools, universities, and local organizations to educate youth about environmental conservation and get them involved in tree planting.
How are community growers selected?
Growers are selected from local communities, with a focus on youth, women, and unemployed individuals. They receive training, equipment, and financial incentives for maintaining trees.
How do trees help reduce flooding and landslides?
Trees absorb rainwater, stabilize soil, and prevent erosion. In areas prone to landslides, planting deep-rooted trees reduces the risk of disasters by strengthening slopes and absorbing excess moisture.
Does this initiative help with climate change?
Absolutely. Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂), reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Our impact model includes carbon sequestration calculations to measure how much CO₂ is removed from the atmosphere.
What are the benefits of urban trees for public health?
Trees improve air quality by filtering pollutants, provide shade that reduces heat stress, and create green spaces that improve mental well-being. Studies show that urban greenery is linked to lower stress levels and better overall health.
Can businesses sponsor trees?
Yes! Companies can purchase “impact tokens”, which represent trees planted and maintained through our initiative. Sponsoring businesses receive sustainability reports showcasing their environmental contributions.
What are impact tokens?
Impact tokens are digital certificates representing donated trees. Unlike carbon credits, they do not offset emissions but allow individuals and businesses to support reforestation efforts by funding tree planting and community-led environmental initiatives.
Are donations tax-deductible?
We are working on partnerships to enable tax benefits for corporate and individual donors. Contact us for details.
